The best paid stock screeners on the market today have come a long way since I first used them in the 1980’s. The best stock screeners no longer require any programming skills, unlike those of the past. They should also offer a web version as well as a desktop version.
In addition, we are not restricted to laborious downloading of data. Remember dial-up? Data is now stored on remote servers, so there is no need to worry about data downloads, or losing personal settings. The best part, for me, I can access them from anywhere on my travels.
The Difference between a Stock Screener and Stock Scanner
You will come across the terms stock screener and stock scanner used interchangeably. They both have access to real-time data.
The main difference is that a stock scanner will be constantly scanning the markets and stream new alerts as they happen in real-time.
A stock screener, will need to be refreshed either manually or with an auto setting.
For example, the stock screeners mentioned below can be either refreshed manually, every 10 seconds, or every minute. This is a good thing, as it gives you time to review the screener results. Even with the stock scanners I have chosen below, the live streaming can be paused.
For most of us it doesn’t really matter what you call them. I still refer to them all as stock screeners, unless I’m talking specifically to day traders.
If you are a day trader you will want a stock scanner as you need to find trading opportunities as they happen in real-time.
There really are too many to choose from, so I list below some of the best stock screeners and scanners based on ease of use, flexibility, and price point.
Trade Ideas Scanner
Trade Ideas is an excellent stock scanner that gives the trader a constant stream of stock trading opportunities during the day. There are more than enough built-in strategies, which you can further modify to suit your particular needs.
The unique feature of Trade Ideas is its Artificial Intelligence engine, Holly. Every day after the market close, Holly reviews and analyses the trading day. This constant learning and improving her trading strategies is a great asset to have on your side.
As traders, we all need to focus on idea generation, because without stock picks there are no profits. Also the shorter term your trading time horizon, the more ideas you need to generate. Trade Ideas is the perfect tool for that, because it will generate ideas from premarket to after- hours, and any time in-between.
